Celebrating Our OPAL Journey

Transforming Play. Empowering Children. Enriching School Life.

At Longshaw Primary School, we are incredibly proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) School. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing every child with the highest‑quality play experiences — experiences that support their happiness, well‑being and personal growth.

Our OPAL journey has transformed our school environment, strengthened our community, and brought joy, creativity and energy to every playtime. Play is no longer just a break in the day — it has become one of the most powerful parts of our curriculum.

What We’ve Achieved Through OPAL

A Play Culture We’re Proud Of

Since starting OPAL, Longshaw has developed a play culture where:

  • Children lead their own play, take positive risks and develop independence.
  • Staff work together to champion high‑quality play every day.
  • Our outdoor spaces are buzzing with activity, imagination and curiosity.

This transformation is not accidental — it’s the result of dedication, teamwork, and a shared belief in the power of play.

Richer, More Creative Play Spaces

Through OPAL, our playgrounds and outdoor areas now offer:

  • Dens, shelters and construction zones that encourage teamwork and problem‑solving.
  • Mud kitchens, nature areas and sensory spaces that spark curiosity and exploration.
  • Active play zones for climbing, running, building strength and developing coordination.
  • Calm corners for peaceful play, reading, or spending time with friends.

Our children now have more choice, more freedom, and more opportunities to play than ever before.

Happier, Healthier, More Confident Children

One of the greatest achievements of our OPAL journey is the positive impact on our pupils. We have seen children become:

  • More resilient
  • More collaborative
  • More creative
  • More independent
  • More physically active

High‑quality play has helped our children grow in confidence and develop essential life skills.

A Whole School Achievement

Our OPAL success belongs to everyone — pupils, parents, staff, volunteers, and our wider community.
From resource donations to volunteering time, our community has supported us every step of the way.

A special thank you goes to Miss Hamamci, whose leadership as our OPAL Play Co‑ordinator has driven this project forward and helped create the exciting, inclusive and inspiring play experiences our children enjoy today.

OPAL has become a core part of who we are as a school:
ambitious for our children, committed to well‑being, and proud of the joyful learning that happens outdoors.
